Foodshed’s Farm to School Program connects school cafeterias in San Diego County with local regenerative farms to make fresh, nourishing, and delicious produce part of everyday school meals.
Alongside sourcing, we partner with teachers and cafeteria staff to bring hands-on food education into schools, helping students build curiosity about food by expanding their tastes and learning where it comes from, who grows it, and how it travels from soil to plate.
Harvest of the Month (HOTM) is a cornerstone of our educational programming, designed to help students develop joyful, meaningful connections with their food. Each HOTM is a complete curriculum module built around a central concept and guiding question. Modules include materials in English and Spanish:
Cafeteria materials
Comic-style posters featuring HOTM characters
Table tents highlighting local farmers
Classroom materials
Tasting kits
Games, stories, videos, and hands-on activities that explore the nutritional, cultural, sensory, and community dimensions of food
Additional educational opportunities
Cooking demonstrations
Classroom visits with our Farm to School Specialist
Virtual and in-person field trips to farms and other sites
Our January/February Harvest of the Month, Dulce the Carrot
Beyond HOTM, we also design custom educational materials that are not tied to a specific crop, working directly with teachers and school staff to tailor lessons to their students’ needs.
